Texas Trust Credit Union Awards $10,000 to Paul Quinn College

Credit Union Establishes Annual Scholarship Fund for the College

ARLINGTON, Texas – April 21, 2021Texas Trust Credit Union is partnering with Paul Quinn College (PQC), America’s first Urban Work College to create a memorial scholarship fund in honor of Miriam Johnson. The scholarship will provide $10,000 annually in scholarships to the college.

Ron Smith, Michelle Carter-Pope, Jim Minge from Texas Trust; Dr. Kizuwanda Grant, VP of Institutional Programs and Maurice West, Dean of Men/External Affairs from Paul Quinn College, and  Ginia Chapline from Texas Trust.

With its first installment from the fund, 14 PQC students were awarded scholarships of $500 and $2,000 to be used for tuition and fees for the spring 2021 semester. Because of its Work College Model, PQC students have the ability to graduate with less than $10,000 in debt. Scholarships like these help students start the next phase of their life with even less debt. Students were selected for the scholarship by PQC for their demonstrated potential for becoming outstanding leaders.

“We are deeply appreciative of Texas Trust for investing in the lives of our students,” said Dr. Michael J. Sorrell, President, Paul Quinn College. “Our students are being challenged to address the most pertinent challenges of our time. This investment by Texas Trust opens the door for their opportunities to match their ambitions.”

The Miriam Johnson Scholarship will be awarded to deserving students on an annual basis. The scholarship honors the late Johnson, who was the wife of Texas Trust board member Joe Johnson. Ms. Johnson, an African American who was a strong proponent for higher education, graduated from Gillespie School of Nursing and received her Practical Nursing Licenses (LPN), during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

“Paul Quinn College’s focus of preparing students to be servant leaders aligns with the people helping people philosophy of Texas Trust,” said Ginia Chapline, COO of Texas Trust Credit Union and chairperson of the Texas Trust Gives Foundation. “This scholarship will help those students lay the groundwork upon which they can build a brighter financial future.”

About Paul Quinn College

Paul Quinn College, one of the most celebrated colleges in the country, is a private, faith-based, four-year, liberal arts-inspired college that was founded on April 4, 1872, by a group of African Methodist Episcopal Church preachers in Austin, Texas. The school’s original purpose was to educate freed slaves and their offspring. Today, we proudly educate students of all races and socio-economic classes under the banner of our institutional ethos, WE over Me. Our mission is to provide a quality, faith-based education that addresses the academic, social, and Christian development of students. Under President Sorrell’s leadership, Paul Quinn has become one of the most innovative and respected small colleges in the nation and now serves as a model for urban higher education. Fortune magazine recognized President Sorrell’s work and the College’s transformation by naming him one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. President Sorrell is also a three-time award winner of HBCU Male President of the Year by HBCU Digest and was named by Time magazine as one of the “31 People Changing the South.”
